Everyone faces adversity at some point in their lives. And yet, some people are able to bounce back, while others never recover. The stress of facing a seemingly insurmountable problem can severely affect our health, whether it be chronic insomnia or anxiety. So how can we learn to recover from our demons? How do some do it while others don’t? What makes the difference?

Answering that question has been my mission. Over the past two decades I’ve delved deeply into the topic with those who have gone through extreme adversity and trauma. From Holocaust survivors to 911 first responders to war veterans, I have devoted my life to cracking the code on how we can all recover from the adversity we face.

Today, PBS and I are teaming up in their series American Health Journal to give you an overview into my findings on how to free ourselves from the weight of our greatest adversity. In this episode, I recount how my personal journey began with a horrific experience that once held me captive, too. But through my own struggles, I developed the educational framework that can help you and anyone else move past adversity to a better future.
